Asian Pear
Taiwanese pears from July to January — top-grafted pears in summer, highland pears in winter.
Winters at low and mid elevation in Taiwan are too mild for temperate pears, so growers "top-graft" temperate pear flower buds onto Hengshan pear trees, producing large, juicy Asian (sand) pears in the lowlands. Dongshi and Heping (Taichung) and Zhuolan (Miaoli) are the main areas: Xinxing arrives first in July, followed by Baodao Ganlu peaking in August. From November to January, Xinxue from highland orchards such as Lishan takes over. Chilled pears stay crisp, making them well suited to sea freight.
